The Emporia State University Teachers College is one of only four post-secondary institutions in the nation, along with Alverno College, Stanford University, and University of Virginia, to be identified as an ''Exemplary Model Teacher Education'' program by Arthur Levine in his 2006 national study of teacher education programs Educating School Teachers. ==History== Initiated in 1863 as the Kansas State Normal School, ESU's Teachers College is the only state institution whose primary mission continues to be the preparation of teachers and other school personnel.
